Modelling in Max

Making the initial face mask into a 3D model is a large part of the project. This involves moving the vertices of the spline mask into line with the contours of my face on the reference image.

First however, it is important to Weld the vertices together or there will be massive gaps in the mesh. It is also helpful to align the right side of the mask along the Y axis to make mirroring the face easier later on.

Creating the necessary shape is time consuming and "fiddly" to get right. This is where it is important that the original mesh did not contain triangles. Unfortunately, mine contains a couple due to difficulties connecting splines and where vertices have been Target Welded. "Puckering" of the mesh becomes a hazard, which must be avoided or made difficult to see when a texture is applied.

Above is my progress so far. The hardest part is getting the nose to look "right" and making sure there are no spikes in the mesh's contour which could cause problems when smoothing.
